Armando Resendiz scored a massive upset win over Caleb Plant to torpedo a planned showdown with Jermall Charlo.

Caleb Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) fumbled the bag tonight. In a fight where Plant was a massive favorite in a matchup that was serving as a prelude to a grudge match with Jermall Charlo, he was simply outboxed and outfought by Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) who would score the stunning upset win.

Plant who is known as a ring tactician was simply outsmarted by Resendiz tonight, where Resendiz would box the boxer and force Plant to take the lead early in the fight, which isn’t exactly Plant’s comfort zone. Plant would show some sharp left hands early but Resendiz steady composure and consistent pressure along with his disciplined approach saw him opportunities to catch Plant with clean shots that did accumulated damage to the head and body.

Resendiz staggered Plant badly in the sixth round and from that point on he just took over the fight, pushing Plant at a place and pressure he couldn’t cope with. As the rounds wore on Plant wore down, and Resendiz swept the second half of the fight on my unofficial card in what was a really impressive performance considering he was largely brought in to lose.

The official scores from the judges were 116-112 Resendiz, 115-113 Plant, and 116-112 Resendiz, but I personally don’t see how a reasonable person could’ve scored this fight for Plant. With the win an overjoyed Resendiz says he’s ready for whatever comes next. When Plant was asked where he goes from here considering the Charlo fight is likely off the table for now, he said he’ll need to take him time to review but that he’ll definitely be coming back.

Jermall Charlo TKO-6 Thomas LaManna

Jermall Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) was able to shake the rust off in brutal fashion tonight, dominating Thomas LaManna (39-6-1, 18 KOs) over five rounds before a ringside doctor advised the referee to halt the fight at what was officially the 0:01 mark of Round 6. Charlo scored three knockdowns of LaManna over five rounds — one in the third, fourth, and fifth — and with LaManna showing a lack of coordination at the end of Round 5 it prompted the doctor to have a look at LaManna, who didn’t like what he saw.

Charlo pasted LaManna from the opening round with an exceptional jab that had LaManna’s nose bright red by the mid-point of the opening round. From there it was just the experience, composure, and power that made the difference for Charlo who’s right hands complimented his sharp jab to do the concussive damage.

In the post-fight interview Charlo said he was targeting his grudge match with Plant, but with Plant’s loss that might be pushed off for some time.

Yoenli Feliciano Hernandez UD-10 Kyrone Davis

Yoenli Felianco Hernandez (8-0, 7 KOs) scored a dominant 10 round decision tonight, overwhelming and overpowering Kyrone Davis (19-4-1, 6 KOs) to score a shutout win despite having his perfect knockout streak broken. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, though.

Hernandez was the visibly larger man in the ring and imposed his size and strength from the opening round before scoring a second round knockdown of Davis that had this fight looking like it would end early. Davis would never be able to make a dent in Hernandez but refused to wilt, and absorbed a lot of power punches to both the head and body over the distance to see the final bell. Despite the effort Davis would not win a single round on any of the judges scorecards, who all turned in scores of 100-89 in favor of Hernandez.

Isaac Lucero TKO-2 Omar Valenzuela

Isaac Lucero (17-0, 13 KOs) scored a second round stoppage over Omar Valenzuela (23-1, 20 KOs) in a fight that took off from the opening bell. Lucero came out landing a lot of clean punches right out the gate but Valenzuela started to respond with his own volume attack. While Valenzuela would put up a valiant effort, it was clear that Lucero was getting the better of the exchanges and in the second round timed a perfect overhand right that leveled Valenzuela.

Valenzuela would just beat the 10 count but was still stunned, and Lucero would pour it on him immediately with a consistent attack and with the referee no longer believing Valenzuela was in a position to defend himself, he stepped in to halt the fight at the 2:57 mark of Round 2.
