Skye Nicolson exploring move down in weight following loss
Skye Nicolson is looking at a move down to 122 lbs starting this summer.
Skye Nicolson lost the WBC featherweight title in a pretty sizable upset against Tiara Brown on March 22, and the 29-year-old Aussie says she may move down in weight as she gets her career going once again.
“After that defeat, I feel like it’s more likely that I am going to look at (moving down),” she said.
“We’re hoping to get out in the summer and maybe do the fight at 123 lbs, 124 lbs, and explore the idea of doing 122. I’m excited for that, as well, it’s a new challenge, new weight division, and something to kind of set my mind on.”
The 29-year-old Nicolson (12-1, 1 KO) was one of the more notable and heavily-pushed fighters in women’s boxing over the last couple of years, but the split decision loss to the largely-unknown — though clearly quite good — Brown has her in an unfamiliar position, career-wise.
Moving up and down weight classes is a pretty familiar thing in women’s boxing, however, and Nicolson remains one of the best fighters in and around the 126 lb division, so if she can make the move down to 122 successfully, there will certainly be title shots in her near future.
One big possibility by the end of the year, if all were to go well for Nicolson moving down, would be the winner of the July 11 fight between Ellie Scotney, the IBF and WBO titleholder, and Yamileth Mercado, who has the WBC belt. Mayelli Flores holds the WBA belt, having taken that trinket from Nazarena Romero on May 10.
