CEBU, PHILIPPINES – Alexander Fredriksson (3-0,2KO’s) got off the canvas in the opening round and dominated veteran Mark John Yap (34-20, 17 KO’s) the rest of the way to win by unanimous decision in the main bout of the Friday fight card held at the IPI Compound in Mandaue City, Cebu
Yap has fifty one more fights, even if he was already 36 years old; this was a considerable step up in terms of competition for the 21 year old southpaw from Sweden.
A well timed right hand lead caught Fredriksson, knocking him down. He quickly got up and regained his bearings and continued to pressure Yap. In the subsequent rounds, Yap began to fight on the backfoot but kept being tagged with hard shots.
Yap suffered a flash knockdown in round six and his experience kept him being stopped despite being dominated. The scores were unanimous – 58-54 from judges Michael Espinosa, Arnie Najera and Don Yballe. The referee was Rafael Osumo.
“They said Yap was going to be a hard test but I think I passed with straight A’s.” Fredriksson declared during the post-fight interview.
For the undercard matches - Arlando Senoc (5-0,4KO’s) remained unbeaten after Eldin Guinahon (9-5, 8KO’s) decided not to continue after the third round after being peppered by hard body shots.
John Paul Panuayan beat Mario Bersano by TKO in the second round due to an injury to Bersano’s right eye caused by a legal blow, Mark Gil Gandi won by unanimous verdict against Kasty Flores after four rounds, Jubert Cahimat also got a four round unanimous decision against Aldren Aton and Crixian Arriola vs Francis Arante ended in a hard fought majority draw.
