Navarrete and Suarez make weight for WBO world title fight

0 1
On San Diego we’ll get the chance to see WBO Super Featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete (39-2-1, 32) defending his belt against unbeaten Filipino fighter Charly Suarez (18-0,10), in what is a make or break fight for the 36 year old Filipino who is unlikely to get another shot if he fails to win this one.

On Friday night the two men took part in their weigh in for the bout. On the scales Suarez made the 130lb limit on his first attempt, coming in at 129.9lbs, whilst Navarrete was originally 130.3lbs and had to come back for a second attempt at the weight, which saw him weigh 130lbs.

The bout, which headlines a Top Rank Card, is set to be an interesting bout. It follows a pretty interesting run for Navarrete which has seen him go 1-1-1 in his last 3, and begin to show signs that his size, and weight, are becoming issues for him, rather than the advantages they were 122lbs and 126lbs. He fought to a draw in 2023 with Robson Conceicao, lost last year in a Lightweight bout against Denys Berinchyk, and last time out scored a 6th round KO over Oscar Valdez, in what was a second bout between the two and seemed to suggest it was time for Valdez to retire.

As for Suarez the Filipino was a former amateur standout whose career has been a frustrating slow burn in the pro ranks. He is unbeaten in 18 but that has included a late come from behind win over Paul Fleming, when he was well behind, and since then he has failed to really impress with his most notable result being a narrow win last year against Luis Coreia. This is very much a step up in class for him.
