‘There’s no routine win’: WBC president talks Canelo vs Scull
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says Canelo can’t afford to look past William Scull.
Ahead of Cinco de Mayo weekend WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman shows off his latest trophy which will be awarded to the winner of Canelo Alvarez’s fight with William Scull, and shares some thoughts on a few other topics as well.
Sulaiman on his new belt created for the Canelo vs Scull winner
“This is a Cinco de Mayo (belt). We have had this tradition since 2017. It’s a special trophy for the winner of the fight...This is a tribute to the defense of a warrior and a gift from boxing and Mexico to the world.”
On how much it costs to make these belts
“Priceless. The cost — it’s all hand-painted, it is handcrafted, and you cannot buy it. You have to win it in the ring on Cinco de Mayo...to put it to a price would make it a very low resolution to what the grade of a piece — a unique piece, there’s only one. So it’s something priceless.”
On Canelo vs Scull
“There’s no routine win. There’s no fight that you can take as a step. This is a fight in which everything is in the table. Scull is undefeated, Cuban, very good technician. It’s a complicated fight when you take into consideration the air in Saudi, the time’s at 6 a.m., the different nutrition. It’s not easy. It’s a very high risk for Canelo Alvarez.”
On if he thinks a Canelo vs Chris Eubank Jr fight can happen in the next year
“I would think the promoters would have great interest in putting it together...It’s a very doable fight, very interesting, and I think the world would love to see it.”
On his thoughts on Tyson Fury returning to boxing again
“He misses boxing, boxing misses Tyson Fury. If he comes back he has our absolute full support.”
