‘I’m here to collect belts at 147’: Boots locked in for Stanionis unification
Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis says his sole focus is on unifying welterweight titles with Eimantas Stanionis.
As Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis gets ready to unify welterweight titles with Eimantas Stanionis this weekend, he talks to Fight Hub TV about his decision to stay at 147, his goal of going undisputed, his reaction to Canelo vs Crawford, and more. Here are some excepts of what Boots had to say with the full video interview in the link at the top.
On why it’s important for him to unify at 147 when there’s bigger names for him at 154
“It’s important to me because not too many people can say they were undisputed in one weight class and things like that, and I just wanna have my name up there with the greats. I want to stamp my name at 147 with the Floyd Mayweathers, Sugar Ray Leonards, and guys like that. I want to be one of the big dogs at the welterweight division so when people hear ‘welterweight division’ they say ‘Floyd, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jaron Ennis.’”
On Teofimo Lopez targeting him as a future opponent
“I’m not worried about nobody else outside Eimantas Stanionis. I’m locked in on him...I’m here to collect belts at 147 and show out and that’s what I’m going to do.”
On Terence Crawford moving up to 168 to fight Canelo
“You got to lean towards Canelo because he been at that weight for a long time now and he been putting big guys out. And Crawford a little smaller so I don’t know, we got to see how it play out come whenever they fight...It’s boxing but I think you got to lean more towards Canelo ‘cause like I said before because he been putting big guys out and down and Canelo not even really a ‘68 pounder, he should really be at ‘60 maybe.
“I think Crawford should take a warm up fight at least at ‘60 just to get his body the feeling of somebody a little bit bigger and things like that. And I know when you go up in weight you got to develop that power and — not develop power but like put that muscle on and be heavy and things like that. So he might not want to take a fight because he’s trying to build up right now but I think he should just to stay sharp, that way he don’t have a long layoff.”
