Takayama vacates JBC belt, Yamaguchi to face Yoshida for title

0 2
Over the weekend it was announced that the planed Japanese Super Flyweight title bout, between champion Suzumi Takayama (9-0, 8) [高山 涼深] and mandatory challenger Jinya Yamaguchi (5-0-1, 2) [山口仁也], set for a Champion Carnival bout on April 22nd, has been cancelled. This is after Takayama was forced to vacate the title, citing health grounds.

The now former champion, who had held the title since June 2016 and scored 4 defenses, and his team, from the Watanabe Gym, had informed the JBC of the decision last week, with Takayama said to be having a "temporary break due to illness".

Thankfully for fans, and Yamaguchi, we have seen Ohashi gym, Watanabe Gym and the JBC come to a very reasonable solution to things, by having the vacant title now be on the line on April 22nd, when Yamaguchi will instead face Takayama's stablemate Kyotaro Yoshida (6-3, 3) [吉田京太郎] for the now vacant title.

As a result of the change we'll see the #1 and #3 ranked contenders facing off for the now vacant belt, in what could well be a more competitive bout than the originally planned one. Regarding the change Hideyuki Ohashi announced the changes and asked for understanding from fans who will be attending the event.
