Back at the start of March news began to break that the US return of Undisputed Super Bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue (28-0, 25) [井上尚弥] was going to be part of a stacked Cinco de Mayo weekend, with Inoue facing once beaten puncher Ramon Cardenas (26-1, 14), after Mexican fighter Alan Picasso Romero (31-0-1, 17), had pulled out during negotiations.
Top Rank, Inoue’s American promoter, officially announced the bout today, announcing that it will take place at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, on May 4th, with the pre-sale tickets being released on Friday.
For Inoue the bout will be his 4th in the US, and his 5th outside of Japan, as he looks to build not just his legacy as a boxing great but also his profile internationally. Notably he has fought his last 8 in Japan, where he has beaten the likes of Nonito Donaire, Paul Butler, Stephen Fulton, Marlon Tapales and Luis Nery, with his last bout in the US coming back in 2021 against Michael Dasmarinas, in an IBF mandatory, and the one before that coming against Jason Moloney, in the Bubble during Covid restrictions.
To go along with the announcement Top Rank have also announced that the poster can be purchased from the Shop Top Rank website.
At the time of writing there has been no under-card bouts confirmed for the show, though it is expected to be a stacked card, given the fact few know of Cardenas, and Inoue alone is unlikely to fill the T Mobile Arena for what many view as little more than a mismatch and formality.
