Earlier today we saw the announcement made for the debut of former amateur star Tomoya Tsuboi (0-0) [坪井智也], and it appears Tsuboi, and Teiken, are looking to make a statement straight away, with the 28 year old debuting against WBO Asia Pacific #2 ranked Bantamweight Boonrueang Phayom (14-3, 14), in an 8 rounder at a contracted 117lbs.
Tsuboi was a genuinely sensational amateur, going 106-25 (10) in the unpaid ranks, winning 4 consecutive All Japan titles and the 2021 World Amateur Championships. Due to his excellent amateur pedigree he became only the second fighter to get a JBC A class license before his debut, following in the footsteps of Olympic champion Ryota Murata. That amateur pedigree is why he’s being matched in such a stand out debut, and it’s a real baptism of fire.
The 25 year old Boonrueang is no world beater, but he is a dangerous fighter who has scored stoppages in all 14 wins, including good wins against domestic foes like Attanon Kunlawong and Prasitsak Phaprom. Notably however he has proven to be a class cannon and has lost all 3 of his bouts outside of Thailand, by stoppage. All in the first 2 rounds.
Tsuboi will have scouted the Thai well, and will know about his questionable chin, but will have to make sure to keep his composure in his pro debut, and not get caught up in the emotion of the moment. Especially given his debut comes on one of the most stacked Japanese cards of the year, featuring a Flyweight unification bout between WBC Flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji (24-1, 15) [寺地 拳四朗] an WBA champion Seigo Yuri Akui (21-2-1, 11) [阿久井政悟], the first defense of the WBO Light Flyweight title by Shokichi Iwata (14-1, 11) [岩田翔吉] and a mouth watering WBO Flyweight title bout between defending champion Anthony Olascuaga (8-1, 6) and Hiroto Kyoguchi (19-2, 12) [京口紘人].
