Schofield pulled from Stevenson fight with illness
Floyd Schofield is officially out of Saturday’s showdown with Shakur Stevenson in Riyadh
The Ring announced on Twitter that undefeated lightweight Floyd Schofield, who no-showed today’s Grand Arrivals for Saturday’s Riyadh Season clash with Shakur Stevenson, has officially been pulled by the BBBofC due to illness.
Organizers are on the hunt for a last-second replacement foe, with The Ring naming BoxRec no. 12 super featherweight Moussa Gholam (22-1, 13 KO) and WBC no. 12 lightweight Josh Padley (15-0, 4 KO) as potential candidates. You’ll recall Padley from last September’s upset of Turki Alalshikh’s special boy, Mark Chamberlain, while Gholam’s biggest fight to date saw him drop a split decision to world-ranked Elnur Samedov in 2022.
Neither figure to trouble Stevenson (22-0, 10 KO), but considering what organizers usually scrounge up on four days’ notice, they could do a lot worse.
Schofield (18-0, 12 KO), last seen getting off the canvas to beat veteran Rene Tellez Giron in November, initially got the call when a hand injury to mandatory challenger William Zepeda torpedoed a planned clash with Stevenson. We’ll see if he can snag another major opportunity in the near future.
