Jamel Herring, the former junior lightweight boxing world champion who stepped on the world stage for the U.S. at the 2012 Olympics, has been arrested in Ohio on misdemeanor domestic violence and assault charges.

According to ESPN, the 39-year-old was booked into Warren County Jail and was awaiting arraignment following the Jan. 9 arrest. His bail was set at $50,000 for the alleged assault and $75,000 for the alleged domestic violence

Herring's history as a boxer dates back more than two decades. He began training in 2001 and began competing for the All Marine Corps boxing team after being deployed to Iraq in 2005. He went on to win a silver medal at the 2010 World Military Games and a gold medal at the 2011 and 2012 Armed Forces Championships while he was an active sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He qualified for the 2012 Olympics and was the only U.S. Marine to compete at the London Games.
