Amateur boxer Rashed Al-Swaisat dies following match at Youth World Championships

The 19-year-old Jordanian boxer succumbs to injuries sustained during an AIBA competition in Poland.

19-year-old Jordanian amateur boxer, Rashed Al-Swaisat, has died after sustaining a brain injury during an April 16 match at the AIBA Youth World Championships in Kielce, Poland. Al-Swaisat was knocked out in the third round of his light-heavyweight bout. He received treatment in the ring by on-site doctors before being rushed to a Kielce hospital for emergency brain surgery. Rashed Al-Swaisat remained in intensive care following the surgery, but sadly did not recover.

AIBA released a statement today in response to the tragic news.

“It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Rashed Al-Swaisat of Jordan, who had been admitted to hospital on April 16 further to his fight during the AIBA YWCHs. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates, to whom we offer our sincere condolences.”

As of now, AIBA has not released additional details about the nature of the injury or time of the young man’s passing. Local police are conducting an investigation of the incident.
