The ongoing saga over the WBA "regular" Minimumweight title bout between Vic Saludar (20-4, 11) and Robert Paradero (18-0, 12) took another turn on Friday as Bebot Elorde, the promoter of the planned bout, announced a delay to the contest, which was scheduled for January 30th.
The bout, which is said to be the the 5th All Filipino "world" title bout, was originally announced for December 5th last year, before being pushed to January 30th due to Covid19. The latest announcement regarding the contest is that it is now being pushed back to February 20th, following a request from Saludar and his team.
Sadly Mindanao, where Saludar is, is currently on lockdown due to Covid19. This would have meant the 14 day quarantine period he would have needed for the January 30th date wouldn't be possible, according to Elorde.
Not only has the date of this bout changed but it seems that the venue might as well, with the Elorde facility in Paranaque City now being under a general community quarantine (GCQ), essentially ruling out the venue for sport. As a result Elorde is looking to secure a venue in Binan as a backup, in case the GCQ isn't modified in time for the February 20th date.
Elorde revealed to the Manilla Bulletin that issues with this fight actually pre-date the announced December 5th date, telling the paper that the plan was originally to hold this bout in September, but due to the pandemic things are always changing. He does, however, seem determined to put this bout on, stating it was a "good vacant title fight", and it's hard to disagree.
It also appears that the Filipino title bout between Bienvenido Ligas (12-1-1, 9) and Alphoe Dagayloan (14-3-6-1, 5), will be pushed back to the February 20th date, continuing the show as a title double header, with 4 round bouts expected to be added to the show to give some more depth to the event.
