Alvarez is set to headline against Erislandy Lara tomorrow

Ramon Alvarez, brother of Canelo, should have made the most of his undeserved WBA title shot against Erislandy Lara tomorrow. He did not. Whether or not he manages to pull an astounding upset in Minneapolis, he won’t be leaving with the belt, as he crushed the scales at 158.6 pounds for his 154-pound bout.

The fight will still go ahead; I suppose the organizers figured they couldn’t afford any more losses after Caleb Truax-Peter Quillin II fell through.

“Inocente” Alvarez (28-7-3, 16 KO) shouldn’t even be here; he got knocked out by Brandon Rios two fights back, which hasn’t really been a forgivable misstep since 2015, and his bounce-back win was a split decision over Argentine journeyman Jose Carlos Paz. The WBA’s rat(f-word)ery worked out in his favor and he completely squandered it; now he’ll get his ass kicked by Lara (25-3-3, 14 KO) for nothing.

No other major incidents went down at the weigh-ins, though it’s interesting to note that Cuban heavyweight prospect Frank Sanchez is facing a 50-pound weight disadvantage in his broadcast opener against Puerto Rican big man Victor Bisbal.
