Gamboa-Martinez, Miller-Corrales added to July 27 Showtime bill

Two lightweight fights have been added to Gervonta Davis’ next undercard.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis returns home to Baltimore for his July 27 Showtime main event against Ricardo Nunez, and a slew of former titleholders are now official for the card.

Yuriorkis Gamboa (29-2, 17 KO) will take on Roman “Rocky” Martinez (30-3-3, 18 KO) in a 10-round lightweight fight, and in another 10-round lightweight bout, it’ll be Ladarius Miller (19-1, 6 KO) against Jezzrel Corrales (23-2, 9 KO).

Gamboa, 37, was at one point rumored to potentially be Davis’ next opponent for this summer, but everyone instead went with Nunez, the WBA super featherweight mandatory challenger. The Cuban veteran Gamboa is far past his best days, but now with PBC, he should at least be able to stay busy and cash a few more checks in his final years as a pro. His career never recovered from an ill-fated decision to leave Top Rank, thinking he was signing with the then-incarcerated Floyd Mayweather, but instead winding up having only been signed to Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

Martinez, 36, just recently returned to action in Puerto Rico, stopping William Gonzalez in the eighth round on March 29. That was Martinez’s first fight since his 2016 knockout loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko. He’s a three-time WBO titleholder at 130.

“I’m in a great position in my career and I’m very happy to be back on this big stage again,” said Gamboa. “Rocky Martinez is a very tough and formidable opponent and we will make this a great fight for the fans. I know that I will make it past this challenge and on to more marquee opportunities. I’m looking at facing Gervonta Davis and becoming world champion again.”

“I’m happy for this opportunity and to have this chance to be near a world title fight again,” said Martinez. “I’m training to win against a good fighter in Yuriorkis Gamboa. It’s a fight that will define my future and I am fully prepared to become world champion again, and this time in another weight division.”

Miller, 25, is an American prospect. He suffered a loss to Rolando Chinea back in 2016, a six-round decision, but has won 10 straight, including an Aug. 2017 victory over Jamel Herring, who now holds a world title at 130. Most recently, he knocked out Daulis Prescott in 57 seconds on Feb. 9.

Corrales, 27, is a tricky Panamanian and former titleholder at 130, losing his belt on the scales before a fight with Alberto Machado in Oct. 2017. The fight saw Corrales winning on the cards before Machado stopped him. He sat out all of 2018 and returned on April 30 in Panama, winning a second round KO in a tune-up.

“I’m coming to make a statement on July 27,” said Miller. “That’s the mindset I’ve been training for. I’m facing a former world champion and a win can solidify my name in the 135-pound division. I’ve been working hard and I know that Corrales won’t bring anything that I’m not prepared for. I’m excited to have this opportunity, take advantage of it and get one step closer to a world championship.”

“I’m very excited to have this opportunity and grateful that I have another chance to fight at the highest level,” said Corrales. “Miller is a very skillful boxer and I respect his abilities. I’m going to test him and see if he can fight off of his back foot. I’m going to prepare so that I have all the tools to get the victory on July 27.”
