The boxing champion was sentenced to six years for the drunken attack.

A Rostov court sentenced regional boxing champion Daniil Gritsay to six years for attacking Igor Nesmelov, a military aircraft engineer from Moscow.

The attack took place on June 19, 2018, near the Dom Turista hotel in the Rostov region of Russia. According to reports, the boxer and his friend were drunk and rowdy underneath the hotel. The engineer, who was in Rostov on a business trip, allegedly put his head out the window and commented on the disorderly behaviour. As a result, Gritsay and his friend stormed the hotel lobby. When the engineer came down to help put an end to the drunken behaviour, he was assaulted by the boxer.

Parts of the incident were captured on security footage, which showed Gritsay inflict serious damage on the Muscovite engineer. Nesmelov suffered a broken jaw, broken teeth, and a brain hematoma from being attacked with a large stone. While Gritsay was not arrested at the time for his attack, local police eventually detained him and his friend after video footage of the news circulated.

According to the press services of the prosecutor’s office, “Gritsay and SIleev were accused under five articles of the Criminal Code, including intentionally causing harm.” However, the charges against Sileev were dropped after he apologized to the victim and paid compensation for the damage caused.

Gritsay, on the other hand, has a history of assault. According to the investigation, the boxer attacked a woman who refused to go out on a date with him, assaulted a customer at a karaoke club, and threatened to kill a neurologist. He has also damaged two cars in Rostov. According to reports, the reason Gritsay has been able to get away with his criminal past is his friendship with local police officers and because of his celebrity status in his town.
