MMA Squared ep 30: A Cowboy scorned

Donald Cerrone went HAM on Mike Winkeljohn, the state of the team, and there may be no going back after this. But how plausible are some of his claims?

Welcome to another episode of MMA Squared. On Wednesday, Donald Cerrone described a grim scene at the vaunted Jackson-Winkeljohn fight team. Of particular concern was the term ‘puppy mill,’ indicating that this was no longer a place where the cream of the crop was cultivated.

However, the image Cerrone paints of “bums” coming off the street to spar with Holly Holm or whichever UFC star happens to be available that day is harder to envision. What self respecting hobo with a black belt from Art Jimmerson cobbles together quarters for head trauma?

Maybe everything that Donald Cerrone has said is true, but there is another story that could be playing out. Last year we saw Cowboy go on his first ever losing streak. Jorge Masvidal blocked his signature headkicks and he was concussed in both the first and second rounds.

Concurrent to Cowboy’s slide, Mike Perry has meme’d his way into the spotlight. A charismatic knockout artist with the potential to grow into something more; maybe Jackson-Wink sees this as a transition, reminiscent of Jon Jones eclipsing Rashad Evans as their signature fighter.
