Patrick Cummins announces he’s off UFC 217 due to ‘mutant’ staph infection

UFC light heavyweight Patrick Cummins says he’s out of his UFC 217 fight against Corey Anderson due to a staph infection — a familiar situation for “Durkin.”

UFC 217 has lost its first fight. Patrick Cummins announced Tuesday morning in a Twitter post that a “mutant” staph infection has forced him to pull out of the pay-per-view event. The light heavyweight was scheduled to face Corey Anderson on the early preliminary card.

“IV antibiotics aren’t killing my mutant staph infection,” Cummins wrote.

The UFC has not yet officially announced the bout cancellation. Anderson reacted to the news on Instagram, saying Cummins would have had time to recover before the November outing.

“How do YOU call it quits so far out from fight night? There's still 3 weeks til fight night,” Anderson wrote. “And I've had staph before.. cut that shit open, drain it, take your meds, take a couple rest days to elevate the leg, and you'll be good by Saturday.

“You called me out in 2014 and I've been waiting for our time to come every since... There's still plenty of time til the dance. I got my best outfit, my familys tickets, and my friends are all looking forward to it. I hope to see you on the floor...”

This isn’t the first time one of Cummins’ fights have been cancelled due to a staph infection. “Durkin” came down with staph in December, too, pulling him from a UFC Fight Night 102 matchup against Gian Villante.

Cummins (10-4) is currently riding a two-fight winning streak, which consists of decision victories over Villante and Jan Blachowicz at April’s UFC 210 and July’s UFC on FOX 25, respectively.

It is not yet clear whether Anderson will remain on the UFC 217 fight card, which takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 4. UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping faces Georges St-Pierre in the main event.
