UFC fighters will be allowed to take CBD in 2018, after change in WADA standards

In 2018, fighters will be able to take CBD, a cannabinoid in marijuana.

Shortly after his 2nd bout against Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz was seen smoking a vape pen at the post-fight press conference.

"It's CBD," Diaz said. "It helps with healing process and inflammation and stuff like that. You want to get this for before or after the fight, in training, to make your life a better place."

Since all cannabinoids are currently banned, Diaz was issued a “public warning” by USADA for admitting that he smoked CBD. Had he actually tested positive “in-competition”, Diaz would’ve faced a suspension as well.

In 2018, that will no longer be the case.

WADA has announced their updated list of prohibitive substances, and CBD has since been removed. CBD, or Cannabidiol, is an active cannabinoid in marijuana. Like Diaz explained back in 2016, it is said to have numerous medical applications, while not having the psychoactivity that THC is known for.

“Cannabidiol is no longer prohibited,” WADA’s statement read (HT: MMA Fighting). “Synthetic cannabidiol is not a cannabimimetic; however, cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants may also contain varying concentrations of THC, which remains a prohibited substance.”

USADA follows WADA standards, which means this will be applicable for all UFC fighters when the changes are enforced next year.
