Mayweather vs. McGregor breaks U.K. PPV record with over 1 million buys

The Mayweather-McGregor bout secured over 1 million pay-per-view buys in the United Kingdom.

The Aug. 26 boxing mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor pulled in over 1 million pay-per-view buys in the United Kingdom, breaking the previous record set by Anthony Joshua and Wladmir Klitschko in April, according to U.K. broadcaster Sky Sports.

The money bout also shattered the U.K. Mayweather-Pacquiao PPV, which secured 700,000 buys in 2015. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao netted 4.6 million PPV buys in the U.S. and it’s estimated that May-Mac pulled in 4.4-4.6 million.

Given the U.K. numbers, it’s likely that Mayweather vs. McGregor will break the worldwide pay-per-view record. The boxing spectacle was hyped as the biggest fight in combat sports history and both men put on a great show at Nevada’s T-Mobile Arena.

Mayweather, 40, finished ‘The Notorious’ with a barrage of punches in the 10th round and extended his professional career record to a perfect 50-0. McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion, started off strong against ‘The Best Ever’ but faded in the middle rounds.

Mayweather announced his retirement after the bout and McGregor is expected to return to MMA in the coming months.
