Frank Mir interested in Fedor fight, Brock Lesnar trilogy next

0

After his recent release from the UFC, Frank Mir is considering a fight against Fedor Emelianenko and a trilogy with Brock Lesnar.

In July 2016, Frank Mir was asking for his release from his UFC contract. Almost a year to the day later, the former UFC heavyweight champion’s request was finally granted.

At 38 years of age, and a fresh free agent, Mir says he is not yet closing his doors on MMA competition. During Monday’s MMA Hour episode, he revealed that he has not lost the desire to fight at the highest level.

“I feel better now, physically and stuff,” Mir said (via MMA Fighting). “Competing is something that once I retire from, it’s not something I can go back and do. … I can’t wait to go back out there to compete.”

Mir has yet to be cleared from his two-year suspension from a failed drug test in March 2016. But once it lapses in April 2018, he is looking at two possible options: facing Brock Lesnar for the third time or fighting heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko.

The only hurdle, according to him, is that he refuses to let himself be tied up with one organization.

“I think (the Fedor fight) would be a phenomenal fight to have on my name as far as somebody that I faced throughout my career,” Mir said. “And another one too would be to finish the trilogy with Brock Lesnar.”

“I kind of want to make to (where) I’m not solidified with one company, and they give me the leniency to fight outside, move around.”

“Fedor is kind of hard to nail down to one company,” he continued. “So I don’t want to get in a situation where I’ve been the last 16 years where I’m like, ‘Hey, I’d like to make this fight work, but I fight for the UFC and he won’t fight for the UFC,’ so that sucks. It was never gonna happen. So I kind of want to avoid that pitfall in the future.”

“Not only am I selling myself as a fighter, but I’m also selling potential opponents in the future. Like, ‘Hey if you sign me, this is a potential fight you could make.’”

With eight months left in his suspension, Mir says he is also considering taking a fight outside the United States.
