Tyron Woodley vs. Demian Maia welterweight title fight official for UFC 214

UFC 214 adds yet another title fight with Tyron Woodley defending his 170-pound belt against Demian Maia.

It’s been talked about for months, and now it’s finally official - Demian Maia is getting a welterweight title shot. And it’s not very far away either. On today’s episode of UFC Tonight, it was officially announced that Tyron Woodley will defend his UFC welterweight title against Maia at UFC 214 on July 29th.

Woodley (17-3-1, 7-2-1 UFC) is coming off two close bouts with Stephen Thompson where the first went to a draw and Woodley edged out the second by majority decision. He picked up the title by stopping Robbie Lawler in the first round of their UFC 201 bout last July.

Maia (25-6, 19-6 UFC) is on an eight-fight winning streak, most recently defeating Jorge Masvidal by split decision at UFC 211 in May.

Maia has been campaigning for a title shot for a long time, but Woodley didn’t seem all that interested in fighting him. I guess something changed, because the two men are being added to a card that now has three title fights.

UFC 214 goes down July 29th in Anaheim, CA. The show will be headlined by a UFC light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. Cris Cyborg will also fight Tonya Evinger for the vacant women’s featherweight title.
