Women’s curling, men’s ice hockey, and bobsledding award medals

Things are wrapping up at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and the trio of medal events set for Sunday in South Korea (Saturday in the United States) is highlighted by a team from the host country that is rapidly gaining in popularity.

The women’s curling gold medal game is set for Saturday evening (7 p.m., ET, NBC Sports), with South Korea taking on Sweden. The South Korean team has become quite popular during these Games, with the moniker of ‘Garlic Girls’ gaining traction thanks to their hometown of Uiseong. Their popularity has grown so much their coach Kim Min-jung has tried to shield them from the distractions.

“I’m sorry that I could not bring the athletes today, because I’m worried there will be too much pressure and burden on them,” Kim told Time Magazine last week. “Even the crowd is too interested in them.”

South Korea is 8-1 in this tournament, suffering only one loss to Japan, a defeat that was rectified with an 8-7 triumph over Japan in the semifinal round to advance to the gold medal game.

These two teams met once already in this tournament, with South Korea beating Sweden 7-6 on Feb. 19.

In addition to the women’s curling wrapping up on Saturday, there will be medals awarded in four-man bobsled and men’s hockey. Germany battles the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the men’s gold medal game in the latter.
