Women’s basketball ranked in top 25
HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College women’s basketball team is ranked 22nd in the nation with a 17-5 overall record.
San Jac is led by freshman guard Eryka Sidney (Houston / Wheatley HS) and sophomore guard / forward Ariona Gill (Las Vegas, Nevada / Arbor View HS). Sidney averages 12.8 points per game, while Gill comes in at 10.1 points per game. Gill is also the team’s top rebounder at 9.8 rebounds per game.
“This team has worked very hard all season to get to where we are today,” said second-year Head Coach Michael Madrid. “There is still a lot of basketball to be played in the last month of the regular season, and I am looking forward to seeing how our team responds and continues to challenge itself on the court.”
San Jac opened 2016-2017 unranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) preseason poll. It started receiving votes in last week’s poll, and thanks to an eight-game win streak has found its way into the top 25 this week.
San Jac has five home games remaining on the regular season schedule, beginning with this weekend’s matchup against Panola College on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. Tenth-ranked and Region XIV foe Trinity Valley Community College visits Nichols Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m., followed by Blinn College on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. San Jac will host its Play4Kay game on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m., where fans will receive free crazy pink hair and are encouraged to make a donation in support of breast cancer awareness and research. San Jac closes out the home season with Sophomore Day on Saturday, March 4 against Jacksonville College at 2 p.m. The 2017 Region XIV Tournament is March 7 – 11 in Jacksonville, Texas.
