Kyrie Irving up for “Best Game Winner” award

Not that one, the other one

The NBA has changed things up this season. Rather than announce this year’s awards during the playoffs, it is holding an award show on June 26th to celebrate the past season.

Drake will be hosting the show, which will feature the traditional awards like MVP, Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, etc...

In addition to the traditional awards, the league has added six new awards that will be decided by fan vote. The awards include Assist of the Year, Best in Style, Block of the Year, Dunk of the Year, Game Winner of the Year, and Performance of the Year.

Out of the new awards, Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert are the two nominees from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shumpert is up for Best in Style, while Irving is up for Game Winner of the Year. His Christmas Day game winner against the Golden State Warriors will compete against Russell Westbrook against the Denver Nuggets, and Tyler Ulis against the Boston Celtics.

I’m obviously biased, but Irving’s is clearly the best shot out of the options. Only his came against a contender and Westbrook’s shot was more of a desperation heave. Not a calculated turnaround jumper over good defense.

You can make your opinion known by voting at nba.com/nbaawards. You can also view the nominees for the other awards.
