[Men's Basketball] Poortenga ready to call ONU home for next four years

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — The ONU men's basketball team and head coach Ralph Hodge are very pleased to announce their most recent addition to the 2017 recruiting class. The Tigers have added 6'5" post man, Matt Poortenga, from Medaryville, Indiana. He played for West Central High School all four years.

Poortenga is coming off a career year for the Trojans. Matt averaged a team-high 18.3 points per game, adding 9.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. One of his career games came this season; he scored 34 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and recorded four assists and had seven steals.

Following his senior season, Poortenga was named First Team Hoosier North All-Conference and IHSAA All-State Honorable Mention. He was also named WKVI Player of the Week once during his senior season and following his career year was selected to play in the North vs. South Elite All-Star Game; which he also played in his junior and sophomore seasons.

Poortenga is currently undecided in what he will study at Olivet, but was named Hoosier North Academic All-Conference (2015-2017). Matt and his family attend First Christian Reformed Church in Demotte, Indiana.
