Kansas head coach Bill Self will return next season
By JAMES MADDEN
Kansas head coach Bill Self will return to Kansas next season, per release. Self just finished his 23rd season with the program, which ended with a 24-11 record and a trip to the Round of 32.
In the release, Self released a statement about his decision:
“With renewed clarity and the ongoing support from our administration, I remain focused and committed to Kansas Basketball competing for a National Championship. I look forward to seeing and hearing the best fans in college basketball next season at Allen Fieldhouse.”
With Self’s ongoing health issues, there was speculation he could consider retiring after the season, but the longtime Jayhawks head coach is back for at least one more season.
Self left a practice in January and was hospitalized with abnormal chest issues, forcing him to miss a game against Colorado. He has had a string of health issues over the past few seasons, leading to retirement rumors after each of the past couple seasons.
One of the most storied programs in America, Kansas will bring its all-time winningest head coach back for his 24th season.
With top-recruit Tyran Stokes still uncommitted and considering the Jayhawks, it’s widely believed that the decision from Self on his future would affect Stokes’ decision to commit.
With Self’s future with Kansas now certain, Stokes may be nearing his decision between Kansas, Kentucky and Oregon.
Self is set to turn 64 in December, but after all the rumors and speculation, he’ll return for his 24th season in Lawrence.
