Kentucky legend on current team: ‘I hate the state we’re in’

Kentucky legend Demarcus Cousins joined FanDuel’s Run It Back show, where he talked about the season and the current state of his alma mater’s basketball program.

“I hate the state we’re in, where Kentucky basketball is right now,” Cousins said. “I got a lot of respect for the history of Kentucky basketball, but the history isn’t what’s getting the top talent. Top talent is what wins games.”

The Wildcats were a No. 7 seed in head coach Mark Pope’s second season, where they reached the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Iowa State in blowout fashion.

Dealing with a plethora of injuries all season long, Kentucky was without likely starters in Jaland Lowe and Jayden Quantaince for the majority of the season.

Kentucky finished 22-14 this season and placed ninth in the SEC regular season race.

A fall from grace, the Wildcats are 46-26 in two seasons since the departure of their legendary former head coach John Calipari.

With the Wildcats’ season ending in the opening weekend, Calipari has led Arkansas to back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances since taking over in Fayetteville.

After years of dominating the recruiting game, Kentucky has yet to land a high school commitment in the class of 2026.
