Bill Self in preseason: ‘I won’t even consider going out on a down year’
By JAMES MADDEN
With Kansas’ season coming to an end Sunday in San Diego, speculation about a potential retirement for Bill Self is once again at the center of many offseason conversations.
Self said postgame that he has not made a decision about his future and is planning on spending time with his family and reflecting.
“I’ll get back and get with family and see what’s going on,” Self said after Sunday’s loss. “I love what I do. I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy. I’ll get back home and it’ll all be discussed.”
Before the season, Self spoke about a potential retirement in a sit-down with CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish.
“I won’t even consider going out on a down year,” he said. “That’s not even a consideration.”
In Self’s 23rd season at Kansas, the Jayhawks finished 24-11 and were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Rick Pitino and St. John’s.
Kansas has failed to reach the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in four straight seasons, one of which Self wasn’t on the sidelines due to health issues.
Should Self announce his retirement, many candidates are expected be in play, but current assistant and former Brooklyn Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn is believed to be the favorite. Vaughn played at Kansas from 1993-97 under legendary head coach Roy Williams.
