Two College Basketball Coaches Fired Sunday Morning -- And More Could Be Coming
The men's college basketball regular season ends Sunday, which means athletic departments around the country are going to be deciding if their programs need a change in leadership.
Already this morning, we've seen two college basketball head coaches fired, according to multiple reports, including one in a major conference. There will likely be more on the way.
Georgia Tech parts ways with Damon Stoudamire
When Georgia Tech hired Damon Stoudamire in 2023, you could see the vision of what the school was hoping for. A former NBA star, Stoudamire had experience as an assistant coach in college and the pros and spent five seasons as the head coach at Pacific, where he went 32-19 over his final two campaigns.
Unfortunately, things did not come together for Stoudamire in Atlanta. Georgia Tech went 14-18 in his first season before following that up with a semi-respectable 17-17 showing that included a trip to the NIT.
Things cratered this season however, with the Yellow Jackets finishing in last place in the ACC with a record of 11-20 and 2-16 in conference play. Stoudamire went 42-55 overall at GT, which will pay the former University of Arizona point guard $2.6 million over the next two seasons, unless that cost is offset by him getting another job.
Dwayne Stephens out at Western Michigan
A Ferndale, Michigan native, Stephens was a star at Michigan State in the early 1990s and later served as Tom Izzo's top assistant at his alma mater from 2003-2022.
Western Michigan tapped Stephens to lead their program four years ago, but the move did not pan out. Overall, the Broncos went 42-84 under Stephens, including 26-46 in MAC play.
More firings are coming
Teams are going to need to jump into the offseason, which includes the transfer portal and all that comes with it, as soon as possible, meaning decisions will be made quickly.
We'd expect more coaches to receive pink slips throughout the day into Monday.
