Bush III Adds Energy to Hawks Championship Push
The Big Barrel Hawks continue to strengthen their Hawke’s Bay core with the return of local wing Clifton Bush III, a player whose connection to the region and the club runs deep.
Born and raised in Napier, Bush came through the Hawke’s Bay pathway before developing his game at Napier Boys’ High School, where his athleticism and attacking style quickly made him one of the region’s most promising young players. The 6’5″ forward plays with pace and physicality, bringing energy on both ends of the floor and a relentless ability to attack the rim.
His abilities saw him recognised nationally during his school years, earning Tournament Team honours at the Secondary Schools National Championships and selection in the extended Junior Tall Blacks squad in 2020.
Basketball runs deep in the Bush family. Clifton is the son of former Hawks player Clifton Bush Jr, a New Zealand NBL champion and one of the league’s most respected forwards. Continuing the family’s involvement with the organisation, Clifton Bush Jr now serves on the Hawks board, making Bush III part of another father son connection within the club.
Off the court, Bush is also contributing to the growth of the game locally, recently taking on a new role with Basketball Hawke’s Bay as Programmes Coordinator, where he will help deliver development programmes for young players across the region.
For Bush III, wearing the Hawks jersey has always meant more than just basketball. “I’ve been around the Hawks environment for a few years now, and this season I want to play a big part in helping this team win games,” Bush said. The Hawks believe Bush’s athleticism, ability to score and deep connection to the region make him an important piece of a roster focused on winning a championship this season.
Big Barrel Hawks General Manager Jarrod Kenny said Bush III brings a positive energy to the group. “Cliffy has something about him, when he steps on the court he brings a real vibe. There’s a level of intensity and competitiveness in the way he plays that lifts the team around him.”
With 2026 marking 50 years since the first Hawks team took the court in 1976, the club continues to assemble a roster built around pride in the jersey and a clear focus on winning.
Bush lll’s return adds another piece to that foundation.
