College coach questions players ‘making more money than most people in this room’
By JAMES MADDEN
UAB head coach Andy Kennedy voiced his frustration following his team’s loss to Tulane on Sunday, in which it shot 10-of-22 on layups. Kennedy was critical of his team and expressed his concerns with the fact that some players on his roster make more than many staff members in the locker room.
“These are college scholarship players that are making more money than most people in this room. Is it too much to ask for you to make a layup?,” Kennedy said postgame “I mean, we’re in Bozo Land, man.”
Kennedy’s public criticism came just days after Jerome Tang lashed out on his players following a blowout home loss to Cincinnati. Just hours after Kennedy’s criticism of his team, Tang was fired by Kansas State for the comments, which AD Gene Taylor called embarrassing for the university.
The UAB head coach has had a successful run as a head coach in Birmingham, his second stint as a head coach, following a 12-season run at Ole Miss. Kennedy has won more than 20 games in every season with the Blazers and has reached two NCAA Tournaments.
