Sparks flew and tempers flared in a BIG EAST matchup between St. John’s and Providence as a brawl sets off in the second half.
Six players were ejected in Bryce Hopkins‘ return to Providence, 4 from St. John’s and 2 from Providence. Three of the St. John’s players ejected were disqualified for leaving the bench area during the scuffle.
“As bad as it was, it could have been a lot worse,” Duke legend Grant Hill said on TNT.
St. John’s players suspended include Dillon Mitchell, Kelvin Odih, Rubin Prey and Sadiku Ibine Ayo.
The commotion ensued after Providence forward Duncan Powell ripped Hopkins out of the air on a fast break attempt while Providence led 40-39. He and Jaylin Sellers were ejected for Providence. Per NCAA rules Powell will serve a one game suspension for fighting.
Hopkins spent 3 seasons at Providence before transferring to St. John’s this season. Earning him the ire of the Friar fanbase. Hopkins was booed by the fans everytime he checked into the game or touched the ball.
Providence police were on the floor after the scrum around the St. John’s huddle.
St. John’s came into Providence riding a 10-game winning streak while Providence has struggled in head coach Kim English’s first season with the Friars.
Many speculate that if Providence doesn’t show signs of life soon, English may not be coaching the Friars for much longer.
