Syracuse Athletic Director says the program will need ‘corporate support’ to flourish

BY ALEJANDRO LOPEZ

Leadership at Syracuse has been candid in stating what is needed to compete at the highest level in today’s college basketball; financial support and a lot of it.

“If we get the corporate support we need, we’ll be fine,” Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack said. “If we don’t, we’re gonna struggle.”

This is the reality for team’s in the current NIL landscape, not just in college basketball, but in college sports in general.

Former Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim claimed the basketball program would need a $10 million budget to be competitive in the ACC.

Syracuse, like many other schools, is able to provide athletes with revenue sharing as NIL packages.

“We are doing that and we said that publicly,” Wildhack added. “Most power four schools are doing so, not every power four school is doing so, not every ACC school is doing so. So the university has stepped up with their support.”

While revenue sharing certainly helps these schools the reality is that just having enough money likely isn’t enough to compete at the highest level. Syracuse knows that and has made it clear, if they want to get back to being a championship level program they will need third party support to do it.
