There appears to be a recruiting battle brewing for one of the most transcendent talents in the Kentucky area and the country in 2026 point guard Tay Kinney.
Kentucky head coach Mark Pope and Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey each orchestrated in-home visits with the 6-foot-2, 185-pound local prospect as soon as the live period kicked off on Wednesday..
The Newport, Ky. native is currently deciding between a list he has whittled down to Louisville, Texas, Oregon, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, and Arkansas.
Kinney was one of the top performers at the NBPA Top 100 Camp this summer, registering his presence as a traditional point guard capable of orchestrating scoring surges.
He showed an explosiveness, a shiftiness and innate ability in changing directions and changing speeds.
Kinney was proficient in sticking shots from all over the floor and knifing his way to the rim throughout the event.
Now at Overtime Elite, Kinney is a high level game manager who finds teammates at opportune times with slick, timely reads. He had several convincing performances last season, commandeering the uptempo attack and also engineering game altering scoring sprees.
Kinney catalyzed RWE in a 93-88 victory over Cold Hearts, scoring 23 points and handing out a game-best seven assists. He scored 26 points, on the strength of 6-for-11 from 3-point range, during a 97-93 loss to City Reapers.
Having culminated back to back visits to Kansas and Indiana, Kinney is slated for upcoming fall visits to Oregon (Sept.6) , Texas (Sept.12) , Miami (Sept. 19) and Arkansas (Sept.26).
“Coach Cal (John Calipari) is great with guards,” Kinney told ZAGSBLOG regarding Arkansas.
“I speak with (Assistant Coach/Director Of On-Court Player Development) Brad (Calipari) and coach (Chuck) Martin often. They’ve told me that they just let their guards loose…With Coach Cal, he has a great record of sending players to the league.”
