Wayback Wednesday: NBA Live 09 Fresh Daily Grocery
This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! From retrospectives of basketball games and their interesting features, to republished articles and looking at NBA history through the lens of the virtual hardwood, Wednesdays at the NLSC are for going back in time. This week, I’m taking a look back at a novel concept that was employed during the NBA Live 09 preview season: the Fresh Daily Grocery.
It’s no secret that for many basketball gamers, the preview season just isn’t what it once was. With only one game to look forward to every year, increasing fatigue and dissatisfaction with the product, and more than a couple of false claims and broken promises, it’s tougher to get excited; at least if you’re familiar with the routine. That sadly won’t change until such time as we have choices and competition in the space again, and I hope that will happen some day. If and when it does, I anticipate the preview season becoming as fun and interesting as it used to be.
Beyond tantalising previews and promising news, something that I enjoyed about the preview seasons in bygone years were the fun extras that got us hyped for the new games. Official websites provided digital promotional materials, from downloadable freebies to browser games and activities. During the preview season for NBA Live 09, EA Sports launched the Fresh Daily Grocery section on the game’s website. It was a creative concept that not only gave us a reason to check in daily, but also emphasised one of NBA Live 09’s big new features. Let’s take a look back…way back…
Freshness was the main theme of NBA Live 09. On top of further enhancements to animations, controls, and modes, the big new feature and selling point of NBA Live 09 was Dynamic DNA and NBA Live 365. By partnering with Synergy Sports Data, ratings and tendencies in NBA Live 09 were powered by real life performance. As the players provided new data over the course of the 2009 season, their attributes would be updated accordingly. While the need for a suitable sample size meant that DNA would be updated every ten games or so, lineups were adjusted daily according to Synergy data, rather than any changes having to wait for the major roster updates.
This approach gave NBA Live 365 its name, as well as the tagline of “Made Fresh Daily”. It was a great idea, and the concept of player tendencies and ratings driven by real life data for more authentic performance is something we’d be asking for in our Wishlists. Unfortunately, the marketing aspect of these features led many gamers to write off Dynamic DNA and NBA Live 365 as gimmicky buzzwords. Disappointment in NBA Live 09’s immediate predecessors made it difficult for gamers to trust that these monikers weren’t just marketing spin. It also didn’t help that NBA Live 365 was a subscription service, albeit one that was provided free of charge in all new copies.
However, many of us did see the benefit of EA’s partnership with Synergy, realising that it was more than a gimmick. It was a concept that had great potential, so even though we recognised “Made Fresh Daily” as a commercial tagline, we didn’t mind. It didn’t hurt that EA leaned into the premise in the previews leading up to release. That brings us to the Fresh Daily Grocery on the official NBA Live 09 website, launched on October 1st 2008. Sadly the archived page on archive.org doesn’t display it in all its splendour, but picture a supermarket aisle with animated vapour rising from the freezers, and interactive items on the shelves that took you to previews and freebies.
When it launched, the Fresh Daily Grocery was “stocked” with NBA Live 09 preview videos and other such promotional materials. In the lead up to the game’s release on October 7th though, the shelves began to furnish us with some fun goodies. First up was a selection of downloadable wallpaper-sized game art for all of the teams. This was followed by a screensaver featuring a gallery of NBA Live 09 screenshots. The screensaver also promoted the idea of being “Made Fresh Daily”, as for a time new screenshots joined the rotation. That might not sound exciting in an era where live service content is common and screensavers aren’t, but it was definitely novel then!
In a similar vein, one of the Fresh Daily Grocery drops delivered a downloadable “finger calisthenics” game, intended to help with finger nimbleness and dexterity ahead of getting our hands on NBA Live 09. Did it help? Maybe, maybe not, but it was a fun distraction while we waited for the new game to launch! There were also new behind-the-scenes videos from mo-cap sessions, and sizzle reels spotlighting point guards and showing off high-flying highlights. Again, it wasn’t necessarily groundbreaking, can’t-miss content, but it was still fun to log on to the NBA Live 09 website and see what previews and freebies were on offer in the Fresh Daily Grocery.
EA’s marketing department were definitely having fun with it, too. As launch day approached, we were furnished with a downloadable “You Stink” deodorant wrapper. The purpose, according to the description: “Friend’s game stinking up the joint? Call him out on his sorry, stankified gameplay. Just download, print, cut it out, infiltrate your buddy’s house, and tape on to his deodorant stick.” Incredibly silly – as well as questionable advice from a legal standpoint, depending on your interpretation of “infiltrate” – but nevertheless a mildly amusing gag in a less cynical time. I doubt many people actually went ahead with the prank, but it probably raised a few smiles.
That basically sums up the purpose of the Fresh Daily Grocery content in the lead up to the launch of NBA Live 09. It was a light-hearted way of promoting the game with a mixture of preview trailers and entertaining distractions, while also underscoring the theme of keeping the experience fresh with the daily Synergy updates. To that end, while a couple of those goodies were certainly enjoyable, I’m not so much nostalgic for them as much as I miss what they represent. In an era where games are including predatory mechanic, and pre-orders open before we’ve seen a second of gameplay, marketing gimmicks such as screensavers and wallpapers feel refreshingly innocent.
Obviously, we do still see that kind of content during the preview seasons today. In July, the official NBA 2K social media accounts posted wallpapers featuring all of the NBA 2K26 covers. Mind you, in a perfect example of time marching on, they’re for phones, rather than desktop PCs! Gestures like that do remind me of the Fresh Daily Grocery and NBA Live 09, as well as the custom wallpaper generator during the NBA Live 2004 preview season. Granted, that stuff isn’t as exciting as promising news and trailers that showcase big improvements, and they’re undeniably commercial in their own way. I appreciate the creativity though, even if they’re ultimately advertisements.
The Fresh Daily Grocery promotions for NBA Live 09 also represent something that we don’t see quite as often in the social media age: creative official websites for video games. Those sites still exist, and in NBA 2K’s case, it’s where we can find news pre and post-release, patch notes, links to buy and pre-order, server status information, and facilities to upload images for customisation in MyNBA, MyTEAM, and 2K Pro-Am. In short, it remains a handy resource, but gamers are far more likely to keep it locked to NBA 2K’s social media for breaking news and content drops. It’s a quicker method of reaching your audience – especially with notifications – so it makes sense.
All the same, social media’s approach of uniform timelines doesn’t exactly lend itself to the same level of creativity as specially-designed websites. Sure, it’s a great way to send out clips, screenshots, and bulletins that will immediately show up in people’s feeds, but there’s no unique interface that can be explored. It’s also easier to find info on a website than scrolling through a social media timeline, so contrary to what some people may claim, official sites aren’t an outdated concept in 2025. They’re definitely going to be more straightforward though, serving as knowledge bases and storefronts. We’re highly unlikely to see anything like the Fresh Daily Grocery for NBA Live 09.
It’s a shame, as I do believe those creative designs for official video game websites with their interactive elements made preview seasons feel less sterile and commercial. Needless to say it was still being done in aid of selling the games, but the effort that went into those sites made them more exciting than social media posts with preview media and a link to pre-order. It’s something we saw for games of all genres. I have fond memories of the official website for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon providing character bios accompanied by background music and their names being announced. Bethesda’s official websites for Fallout have also been appealing and entertaining.
Times change, but the nostalgia for the “old internet” is understandable. I certainly feel it, too! There was a sense of authenticity and creativity that isn’t always present with today’s algorithm-driven platforms and content creators striving for clicks and clout. Admittedly, technological changes such as phasing out Flash and other design elements haven’t helped; there’s a reason that the archived versions of so many sites aren’t fully functional! I also won’t deny that covering multiple preview seasons has made me more sceptical, and unfortunately a bit cynical in some cases. There’s still a charm to those old official websites though, and ideas like the Fresh Daily Grocery.
And hey, if nothing else, the screensaver that was updated with new screenshots was pretty cool! Indeed, I continued to use it for a while after NBA Live 09 was released. It actually remains available in our Downloads section, though if it does still work, I’d imagine it’ll only feature the initial handful of screenshots and won’t download any of the new ones that came through. That probably makes it the last vestige of the Fresh Daily Grocery that hyped up NBA Live 09 as its release day loomed. They may seem a bit corny now, and they weren’t the most exciting news during that preview season, but those fresh daily freebies and sneak peeks represent goodwill that’s sadly expired.
