This was 100 years ago.

Baseball still holds a sacred place in American culture but it’s undeniably lost ground with the public. It’s still popular in the cities where major and minor league teams play, and in surrounding areas, and people still play the game. It’s embedded in our culture. But in many ways, it’s not what it used to be. Football and basketball have largely pushed past it, and that leaves electronic gaming completely out of the picture.

But baseball still has an undeniably funky, fun, outdoor thing that basketball and football can’t touch. It’s soul is still pretty pure. It’s the beating heart of a democratic nation, where people can squabble, complain and kick up clouds of dirt on the umpire, but in the end, accept the rules.

This video is from 1925, from a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds. It’s been converted to 4K color and the speed has been adjusted. It looks remarkably like a game today, which attests to the qualities that keep drawing us back to the game.
