A ‘tearful’ Christian Horner admits Red Bull exit a ‘shock’ in farewell speech to team
Former Red Bull boss Christian Horner addressed the team after his shocking dismissal
More reporting is emerging about the shocking news that Red Bull has parted ways with Team Principal Christian Horner, the only person to serve in that capacity with the Formula 1 team since its inception.
After 20 years in that role, along with eight Drivers’ Championships and six Constructors’ titles, Horner was dismissed by the team on Tuesday, with official word coming out on Wednesday. According to Sky Sports F1 Horner gave a farewell speech at the team’s Milton Keynes factory on Wednesday, footage of which the outlet reviewed.
“Yesterday I was informed by Red Bull that, operationally, I will no longer be involved with the business or the team moving forward from after this gathering,” began Horner as reported by Sky Sports F1.
“I will still remain employed by the company, but operationally, the baton will be handed over. And that obviously came as a shock to myself, but what I’ve had time to do is to reflect over the last 12 hours or so. And I wanted to stand in front of all of you to break this news and just express my gratitude to each and every single member of the team that has given so much during the last 20 and a half years that I’ve been here.
“When I arrived 20 years ago, with a few less grey hairs, I walked into the team, I didn’t know what to expect, but I was immediately welcomed. And out of two rundown buildings, we started to build what became a powerhouse in Formula 1. Watching and being part of this team has been the biggest privilege in my life,” he added.
Horner then signed off sounding like a member of the Night’s Watch whose watch has ended.
“A new CEO will be announced shortly. I trust him and give him my full support. My instruction to him is to look after all of you,” added Horner.
“I have fought hard, I’ve done my best, I’ve put in a big shift and it now comes to a close.”
According to Sky Sports F1 Horner “broke down in tears” during his remarks, and also “received lengthy ovations from his former colleagues.”

As for what comes next at Red Bull, Laurent Mekies has been confirmed as the new CEO and Team Principal at the team.
Regarding Horner, the phrasing that he will “remain employed by” Red Bull likely means that there is a gardening period under his deal with the team. Sky Sports F1 indicated that it could run through the rest of the season.
However, there are places Horner could land. The former Red Bull boss was linked with Ferrari in the buildup to the Spanish Grand Prix, and teams such as Alpine and Cadillac could also be options.
