Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Taylor Fritz are the final four at what has been a very exciting Wimbledon tournament.

The semifinals at Wimbledon are set and as expected, the potential finals matchup between top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner is still in the cards. Alcaraz will face Taylor Fritz in one half of the bracket, while Sinner will take on the sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic, who has seven wins at The Championships, his latest being in 2022.

On Wednesday, Sinner, the top seed, downed the tenth-seeded American, Ben Shelton, in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4. Sinner, 23, already has a win at the Australian Open this year, and an appearance in the finals at the French Open. He has three Grand Slam titles to his name — two in Australia and one at the US Open — and this semifinal appearance will be his second on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

That semifinal appearance? A straight-sets loss to Djokovic, his opponent this time around as well. Djokovic was pushed to four sets against his quarterfinal opponent, No. 22 Flavio Cobolli, and has had health concerns throughout the tournament, which has become a theme for the 38-year-old Serb. After 24 Grand Slam titles, the wear and tear on his body is unsurprising, though he’s obviously still got some left in the tank after making it this far and with some experience beating Sinner in this very situation.

Djokovic and Cobolli went back-and-forth, with the Italian scoring a first set win and keeping it close throughout the ensuing sets, but Djokovic pulled ahead late in the fourth, winning 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4, after a three-hour match.

Alcaraz, the second seed, punched his ticket to the semifinals with a dominant win over the unseeded Cameron Norrie on Wednesday, and he’s set to face the American, Fritz, who bested No. 17 Karen Khachanov in his quarterfinal matchup.

With Shelton’s exit, Fritz is the last shot for an American man to win this particular Grand Slam. This will be Fritz’s first time in the semifinals at Wimbledon, and marks the second-furthest he’s been at a tournament since making it to the final of the US Open last year. Fritz has faced Alcaraz twice, both losses.

Alcaraz, 22, is part of the new “Big 2” alongside Sinner, as the two have been exceedingly dominant over the rest of the field over the last few years. Most believe Alcaraz and Sinner will meet in the final, as they have in multiple Grand Slam events. Alcaraz holds a 3-1 edge over Sinner in their Grand Slam matches though we’re getting ahead of ourselves — Fritz and Djokovic aren’t exactly going to roll over and let them through without a fight.

Still, smart money is on the new Big 2 continuing to earn that moniker. The men’s semifinals will take place on Friday, which means the final will be set for Sunday to close out the tournament.

On the women’s side, the semifinals include the top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka up against American Amanda Anisimova in one half and the eighth-seeded Iga Swiatek against Belinda Bencic in the other. Those women’s semifinals are set for Thursday, with the final set for Saturday.

Television coverage of Wimbledon is provided by ESPN, with matches on the flagship channel as well as ESPN2, with live streaming on ESPN+.
