Nottingham Hoods unveil dedicated basketball facility
Nottingham Hoods Basketball Club have unveiled a brand-new, state-of-the-art practice facility at Mapperley Sports Village – the official new home of the club’s professional teams, player development pathway, and community programmes.
The former leisure centre has been brought back to life through a partnership between Nottingham City Council, Greenwood Trust and the club.
Hoods have been able to help cover the costs of running the space by renting it to a local school during curriculum hours (9am-3pm during term time), while having a gym operator (TGS Gyms) run the strength and conditioning/gym unit that Hoods players can access 24/7.
This landmark development marks a major step forward for basketball for the club, who brought in Managing Director Russell Levenston, previously at Leicester Riders, before this season.
“This is an incredible announcement that will help transform the club both on and off the court,” Levenston said.
“It will strengthen us commercially and provide our players with the facilities they need to be the best they can be.
“Our goal is to nurture and develop local talent by offering high-level coaching and a clear pathway to excel in the sport. We are committed to inspiring the next generation of athletes and helping them grow both as players and individuals.
“A huge thank you to the special partners who have supported us on this journey — especially TGS Gyms, Greenwood Trust, Mercure Hotel Nottingham Sherwood, and Loc8me.”
As part of this ambitious initiative, the Nottingham Hoods’ Head Office will also relocate to Mapperley Sports Village, further embedding the club at the heart of the local community.
The official opening was marked by Jamell Anderson, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist with Team England, who reflected on his own basketball journey:
“I started playing here at Mapperley when I was 15 or 16 years old. To see it transformed into a hub for elite and community basketball is really special. Facilities like this can change lives. I’m proud to be part of this milestone day for Nottingham basketball and to support the opening of this amazing facility. It means a lot to see something like this happening in the city I grew up in.”
There is also a two-bed physiotherapy treatment room, along with a video analysis room and a cafe area.
Hoods’ Division 1 men’s team will continue to play their games elsewhere, with Mapperley being the community hub, offices and practice facility for the club.
