GB Women fall to Spain in EuroBasket opener
Great Britain Senior Women went down by as many as 34 points before clawing it back for a 70-85 defeat at the hands of Spain in their EuroBasket Women opener in Germany on Thursday afternoon.
26 turnovers proved too many to overcome as GB were unable to recover from a slow start despite winning the second half.
“Too different halves,” GB Head Coach Anna Montanana, who is Spanish, said in the post-game press conference.
“I was not very happy with the first half I think we could have done much much better. We had 15 turnovers, which leads to 19 points, we were not being aggressively defensively and offensively and that has been our identity in the past year, and that is what we were looking for – we changed the pace in the second half. It was important to leave this game on an ok note and with confidence we can come back tomorrow and do better.”
Sam Ashby had 17 points in 17 minutes off the bench, the ever dependable Temi Fagbenle had 14 points and eight rebounds, while new addition Catriona Henderson had 14 of her own.
Spain were led by 14 points from Iyana Carrion.
GB will look to bounce back against Sweden on Friday afternoon at 4:15pm. All games are available to watch on Courtside 1891.
