Dub Hub: Dell Curry says Steph is ‘not even close’ to retirement

Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Tuesday, June 17th.

In today’s Dub Hub:

Stephen Curry may have just wrapped up his 16th NBA season, but the Golden State Warriors star has no plans to call it quits anytime soon—at least according to his father, Dell Curry. In an article by RG, the elder Curry says his son is “not even close” to considering retirement.

Via RG:

“He still loves the game,” says Curry. “He’s a competitive guy. He wants to win another title, so we’re not even close to that window yet. But when the time comes, I think he’ll make the right decision.”

At 37 years old, Curry remains one of the most potent offensive forces in the league. He appeared in 70 regular season games this past year, leading the Warriors with 24.5 points per game while shooting 39.7% from beyond the arc. Though his postseason was cut short due to a hamstring injury, Dell believes his four-time champion son can continue to play at an elite level.

“Absolutely, just because he can shoot the basketball, and he’s going to require attention,” says Curry. “Even if you put him in the corner at 40, 41 years old, you have to guard him. That means that he’s creating space for other guys around him. If you can shoot the basketball, there’s a team that can use you in today’s NBA. But if you’re Steph Curry, I think you’re going to be able to play until you say, ‘I’m done.’”

Curry has two years remaining on his current deal and has made it clear multiple times he intends to finish his career with the Warriors. However, if Dell’s insight is any indication, retirement won’t be part of that conversation for quite some time.

Steph Curry Still Playing at All-Star Level, Father Says Retirement Is Far Off | RG

“It’s just a testament to how hard he works in the offseason to prepare his body for the rigors of the regular season. He’s been in the gym pretty quickly since he was able to get that hamstring cleared up, and he’s been in the gym, in the weight room, working on his body, making sure his strength and his core and everything’s ready to go.”

Kawakami: A Kuminga update, no Durant, and more Warriors pre-July thoughts | The San Francisco Standard

Lacob’s Warriors are always interested in Durant. I’m sure they checked in again recently. If you’re drawing up a list of players who can maximize the final years of Curry’s prime, Durant’s name remains at the top of the list. And KD is likely to be traded before next week’s draft.

But two things make it very unlikely that the Warriors will be the team that ends up with Durant this time: 1) Durant still doesn’t want to do the Warriors thing again and the Warriors understand how sour it can get when he’s unhappy; 2) The Warriors pivoted to Jimmy Butler when they couldn’t get Durant last winter and Butler’s happy here, he fit in tremendously, and messing around with that chemistry doesn’t seem like the wisest play.

NBA free agency 2025: Deals 10 stars should get this summer | ESPN

Best free agent fits: Golden State, Brooklyn

The deal I’d offer: Three years, $81 million. (The final year is a player option.)

Projecting a new contract for Kuminga is like trying to master the Rubik’s Cube.

Like Giddey, the 22-year-old is a restricted free agent and Golden State has leverage, considering the lack of available money teams have to offer in free agency.

However, unlike the Bulls guard, Kuminga’s fourth year was a roller coaster. He went from coming off the bench to start the season, to an undefined role after the Jimmy Butler trade, to averaging 21 points in the Warriors’ second-round loss to the Timberwolves.

As for his next contract, the only thing guaranteed is that Golden State will tender the forward a $7.9 million qualifying offer before June 29.

Sources: Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton has calf strain, will have MRI | ESPN

Haliburton aggravated his calf injury in the first quarter of Monday’s 120-109 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, but he returned in the second quarter with the calf wrapped and finished the game.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle acknowledged his star guard was not 100% after the game, but Haliburton made it clear he had no plans to miss Game 6 with Indiana’s season on the line.

“If I can walk, then I want to play,” Haliburton said.

Finals Film Study: Thunder find transition points in Game 5 | NBA

Indiana has been picking up the Thunder’s ball-handlers as soon as they get the ball in the backcourt. This can take time off the shot clock and, ultimately, wear Oklahoma City down. However, it can also allow Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams to get downhill when their teammates hit their defenders with screens more than 30 feet from the basket.

That happened twice in the second half of Game 5. After an Indiana bucket midway through the third quarter, Hartenstein hit T.J. McConnell with a screen in the backcourt, Williams drove by Tony Bradley (defending well beyond the 3-point line) and drew a foul on Haliburton.

Festus Ezeli teams with Michelob Ultra for Warriors dynasty bottles

Hey Dub Nation! We’ve all seen those corny beer commercials where they try to make opening a bottle feel like winning the Finals. But when Michelob ULTRA decides to honor NBA dynasties with actual gold from actual NBA trophies embedded in actual bottles, even my cynical Warriors-writer heart has to pause and say: okay, that’s pretty sick.
