College Basketball Legend Russ Smith Arrested

0 4

Former University of Louisville star Russ Smith is accused of driving under the influence after being arrested overnight by Louisville Metro Police.

Smith, 34, was pulled over after an officer spotted him making an illegal U-turn across multiple lanes, including a crosswalk, according to the Louisville Courier Journal

Per the arrest warrant obtained by the Courier Journal, police also noted an expired tag on the license plate of Smith's vehicle, and the responding officer reported a "strong odor of alcoholic beverages" on Smith's breath.

The 2013 national champion and 2014 All-American guard told police he had consumed "two bourbon pours neat" before getting behind the wheel.

Smith's BAC was reportedly 0.073, which is a shade under the Kentucky legal limit of 0.08. However, state law says drivers with a BAC under 0.08 but greater than 0.04 may still be charged with DUI if "other competent evidence" exists.

In addition to driving under the influence, Smith was cited for reckless driving for the U-turn, as well as the expired license plate. He was released without bond and is due in Jefferson District Court at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

A New York City native, Smith starred for UL from 2010-14, helping the Cardinals reach back-to-back Final Fours and win the 2013 NCAA Tournament. After leaving Louisville, Smith played briefly for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies, as well as several G League franchises, before making his way overseas.

After a short stint in Turkey, Smith became a star in China. The 6-foot guard twice led the NBL, China's second division, in scoring, and was named the league's Player of the Year, Guard of the Year and Import of the Year in 2017.

Smith later competed in the top tier of Chinese pro basketball and also played in Israel, Iran and Puerto Rico. Most recently, he suited up for Pallacanestro Nardò in Italy.
