Longtime KU men's basketball assistant coach announces retirement

0 3

LAWRENCE (KSNT) - After 37 years of coaching and 14 seasons with the Jayhawks, longtime assistant coach Norm Roberts is calling it a career.

Roberts, a member of the 'A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame,' has been with Kansas head coach Bill Self since 1995. The two were on staff together when Self was the head coach at Oral Roberts. Roberts went with Self to Tulsa, then Illinois and finally Kansas, serving as associate head coach on Self's original 2003 Kansas staff.

The decision comes with Robert's desire to spend more time with his family.

"I've been fortunate that I’ve never worked a day in my life," Roberts said in a press release from KU Athletics. "Being able to coach at Kansas and be part of this program has been unbelievable. After 37 years as a coach, it is time for me to move on, enjoy my family, spend more time with my wife and sons."

Roberts left KU to become the head coach at St. John's. After spending six years in Queens, he returned to Lawrence in 2012.

During his total time at Kansas, Roberts has had a hand in winning seven Big 12 titles, making five NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, four NCAA Final Four appearances and claiming the 2022 NCAA National Championship.
