Now We Know Why UNC Suspended Zayden High
And it’s not pretty
UNC’s ver horribilis continues.
So far, their horrible spring has been defined by the stories about new football coach Bill Belichick and girlfriend Jordon Hudson. We’ll post a list of relevant stories at the end.
Now, the truth about Zayden High’s absence from this year’s basketball team has been explained: he was suspended after filming a sexual encounter without consent from his partner.
There’s more to it than that, though.
According to the News & Observer, High was suspended for the fall semester and re-enrolled for the spring and was not allowed to represent the school in any way.
However, he still was able to use the athletic facilities and to get athlete’s meals and hung out with the basketball team on the Dean Dome court.
His accuser became aware of this and was not pleased.
She has some extensive comments on High’s actions on the night in question and also on how UNC handled his suspension, which you can read in the article.
She asked him to delete the video and then, wisely, made sure to the best of her ability, that it had indeed been deleted (one hopes she thought to check the deleted files too).
Long story short: the complainant and her family feel UNC has not made sure that High correctly followed the penalties imposed on him and the News & Observer points out that public universities in the state are required to release the names of students who violated policies about sexual misconduct, the specific violations and whatever punishments are applied by the university.
However, UNC declined, pointing to N.C.’s public records act and a federal law called FERPA (Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act).
The courts will probably have to sort that out, but at the end of the day, it looks like another black eye for Carolina. We’re not sure they’ve fully recovered from the disgraceful academic fraud scandals of the last decade and none of this is helpful.
It’s also worth pointing out that Hubert Davis, so far, has not had anything to say about High’s situation. Given his somewhat tenuous position, he would be wise to get ahead of this. That’s also true for his boss, A.D. Bubba Cunningham, who risks being responsible for managing not one but now two major stink bombs, and those come with neither football or basketball doing very well. A powerful A.D. can survive a lot, but if your revenue teams aren’t winning? Your odds of survival go down significantly.
