The Cleveland Cavaliers have jumped out to a 2-0 series lead over the Miami Heat. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves — but it’s worth considering who the Cavs would prefer to play in the next round, assuming they get there.
So, who would you pick?
The Indiana Pacers have looked head-and-shoulders better than the Milwaukee Bucks. They have more depth, are more athletic, can play better defense and shoot the ball better from every spot on the floor. On the other hand, Milwuakee has Giannis Antetokounmpo. And Damian Lillard.
In the event the Bucks overcome this 0-2 hole and beat the Pacers — you can assume something miraculous has happened on the backs of Giannis and Dame. In that case, the Cavs would understand the path to the Eastern Conference Finals goes through them.
More realistically, the Cavs will brace for a second-round showdown with a run-and-gun Pacers team that has shown enough defensive integrity to make them interesting. This would be a worthy challenge for Cleveland.
For our next question, we want to know who is more important for Cleveland’s playoff success? Is it the offensive superstar Donovan Mitchell? Or a young, up-and-coming two-way star in Evan Mobley?
The real answer is both. Cleveland won’t go far if Mitchell and Mobley aren’t taking them there. That said, this is an interesting question for the moment. Mobley obviously holds their long-term keys and likely has the ability to raise their ceiling higher than Mitchell. But as Game 2 against Miami showed — the Cavs need someone like Mitchell to take over games when the lights are brightest.
