A most unusual big man who had a huge impact this season

Maliq Brown’s season was disrupted by injuries, first to an ankle and then twice to a shoulder.

In spite of that, we saw a most unusual big man.

He’s capable of scoring, of course, including threes, but what really made him unusual were his other skills, and especially on defense. He is hugely disruptive with a particular brilliance for getting into passing lanes and popping balls loose face-to-face with defenders.

He also proved to be an excellent rebounder and passer. From the Chronicle’s profile.

“Brown ended his first season as a Blue Devil falling just short of the ultimate goal, but his impact on this year’s Duke outfit was clear any time he entered the game. As one of the country’s most versatile defenders and a willing facilitator on an offense full of scorers, he fit like a glove to Scheyer’s team philosophy. His journey in Durham is not done just yet, though. Brown and Ngongba, along with top recruit Cameron Boozer, will look to keep the frontcourt a strength next season.”

It’s too early to know how roles will evolve, but with his unique skill set and his willingness to adjust to his teammates and what they need, Brown’s role will again be major.
