Golden State’s big man shows us all he’s still got it

Last night, with three minutes left in the Warriors’ blowout win over the San Antonio Spurs, longtime Golden State center Kevon Looney did something so uncharacteristic yet so representative of both himself and of the spirit of Late-March NBA Basketball.

He shot a three.

It went in.

“Steve finally drew up a play for me, so I had to shoot it,” Looney said after the game.

Per StatMuse, Looney has made 11 three-pointers our of 64 attempts in his 10-year NBA career. In 2020-2021, he made four three-pointers, the most of his career, and a bit of an outlier, as he has never been a shooter.

Anything can happen in March, and I’m not talking about the NCAA. Late March is the ideal time for NBA teams to play around with skillsets and creative plays as teams prepare for the playoffs or the offseason, and Steve Kerr and Kevon Looney both know it. Maybe we’ll see more Splash Bro action from Looney in the playoffs, but even if not, this is still something to celebrate.
