Steph Curry becomes first player with 4,000 threes

Steph Curry just keeps making history. Over and over and over again. The Golden State Warriors superstar has been the NBA’s all-time leader in threes made for many years, meaning every three he makes sets an NBA record. But some are a little bit more special than others.

One such instance occurred on Thursday, in a nationally televised game against the Sacramento Kings. A few minutes into the third quarter, Curry popped free to fire a three from the right wing. It gracefully glided through the rim, barely touching the net.

And with that, Curry became the first player in NBA history to make 4,000 three-pointers in his career.

It’s a remarkable achievement, especially when you consider just how far past the precedent Curry has flown. No one could have possible known when Curry was drafted seventh overall in 2009 that he’d have a chance at passing Reggie Miller and Ray Allen. A few years later, Allen would retire as the NBA’s all-time leader in threes. His number made? 2,973.

Yet here Curry is, having demolished that number. And while he changed the game and made it a sport for high-volume three-point shooters, he still towers over the next players on the all-time list. Only one other shooter has surpassed Allen: Curry’s draftmate James Harden, who trails Curry by nearly 900 triples. Curry’s longtime teammate Klay Thompson, one of the sport’s all-time great shooters, is more than 1,300 threes behind his former running mate.

Curry is simply in a league of his own. 15 years ago it seemed utterly unbelievable that any player could ever reach 4,000 threes, and now the chef can set his sights on an even higher number.
