UNCW puts an end to Delaware’s cinderella run in CAA Finals matchup
BY ALEJANDRO LOPEZ
An early Cinderella story brewing in March was snuffed out by UNCW as they ended Delaware’s improbable hot streak.
The Seahawks defeated Delaware 76-72 in the CAA Finals to punch their ticket to the big dance for the first time since 2017, and what may have seemed like a lopsided matchup between a 2 and 12 seeded team, respectively, was anything but.
Delaware had won 4 games in 4 nights heading into this contest, including a victory over the tournament’s 1 seed, Towson.
This game had all the makings of history waiting to be written as Delaware became the first double digit seed to ever reach a championship game and were knocking on the door to win it all.
UNCW were relatively in control for a majority of the first half, but they would then have to deal with a second half comeback fitting of Delaware’s season.
The bench scoring was the difference for UNCW as they outscored Delaware’s bench 28-0, including 15 points from Noah Ross.
“Just pure joy. I want to thank God for putting us here,” Ross told CBS Sports. “It’s always going to be hard, but it’s always going to be worth it. We have a hell of a team; everyone is connected, great coaching staff, and everyone is committed to coming out on top.”
Donovan Newby led the way for UNCW with 17 points as UNCW became the leading program in CAA tournament championships.
